NASA Astronaut Facility
Clear Lake, Texas

LEED Certified

The NASA Astronaut Quarantine Facility, located at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, will be used to assimilate astronauts to the conditions of space and earth prior to and after flights into space.

In addition to creating pleasant outdoor spaces where family members and astronauts can congregate, a major component of the project was to achieve LEED status. The LEED requirement to remove excess water from the site was used as a design opportunity. Within sight of the building are circular detentions ponds filled with interesting native plants to absorb run off water and reduce maintenance and irrigation requirements. The ponds are attractive and function as destinations. Trees are planted in a random layout in order to create a more natural environment for recovering astronauts.
