Rice University Lovett Quadrangle
Houston, Texas
The Office of James Burnett worked closely with Rice University and Lovett College students to redevelop and program an existing residential quadrangle for Lovett College. Important program elements included pedestrian circulation, creation of a large dining terrace, large activity lawn for recreation and sand volleyball court.
The redeveloped quadrangle successfully addresses all of these program elements. A beautiful arched walk provides clear and functional access through the space and supports the re-zoning of the uses. Stone steps and walls were developed to provide strong access from Lovett House. Seating was created for students to socialize and watch adjacent recreational activities. A crushed stone terrace with seating provides opportunities for dining and gathering. A barbeque area was also developed with crushed stone surfacing that takes advantage of four existing 80-year-old Live Oaks. A large activity lawn and sand volleyball court provides space for active recreation as well as drama performances and special events hosted by the college.
