South Texas Law Center - Roof Garden
Houston, Texas

The Office of James Burnett worked closely with the South Texas Law Center and Gensler to develop an outdoor terrace that could be used by students to congregate and study outside the new library expansion. A roof garden on the sixth level offers magnificent views of downtown Houston, while providing adequate space adjacent to the library.

Raised planters create a necessary sense of enclosure and give the space a human scale. River birches provide shade throughout the garden, while perennials, herbs, and grasses offer a wealth of seasonal change and sensory experiences. Each planter is made with a seat wall on its edges, inviting students to sit and study, or just relax. Additional flexible seating allows for meetings of small and large groups. Furthermore, in an effort to offer the students the same amenities found within the library, there are voice and data connections integrated throughout the garden.
