A visionary project focused on the better use of excess land surrounding airports, airport community farms take advantage of typically well-drained and easily accessible land that could be used more sustainably. Research revealed that six major airports could produce enough food for 76,000 people while also providing many jobs. Furthermore, airport farms would introduce an additional venue for farmers – selling locally grown vegetables and fruits, along with other regional specialties, to travelers seeking a more sensual experience of place.
Also created by airport farms would be a strong regional identity that is often absent from airports, thereby connecting the traveler to the region. The first and last image most travelers have of a place is that which can be seen out of an airplane window. Views of beautifully orchestrated fields of seasonal harvests would create a memorable threshold in and out of cities.
