First Presbyterian Garden
Houston, Texas

Nestled in the Sanctuary Courtyard of the First Presbyterian Church in Houston is the Memorial Garden. The courtyard space includes a Columbarium Garden and a Memorial Wall. The intent of the Memorial Garden is to create a warm atmosphere that is beautiful and alive.

The Columbarium Garden is a circular shaped burial area for loved one’s ashes. The circle, which symbolizes the Ring of Life, is divided into 12’ x 12’ burial plots.

The Memorial Wall slices through the center of the circle. The beautiful travertine stone wall is engraved with a Biblical quote on the Sanctuary side and the names of the deceased on the other side. Bronze water scuppers break the wall as water spills over into a bed of Mexican beach pebbles at the base of the wall. The movement of water animates the space generating a soothing sound.

The wall was placed within the circle to take advantage of the light and shadow of the courtyard. The placement distinctly divides the space, creating opportunities for both social and private contemplation. On the sanctuary side, a small grass lawn is open to the sunlight and provides a space for gathering. The other side of the wall is shaded by an existing 40’ tall Water Oak and benches are placed throughout providing space for reflection.
