Kansas City South Loop

The South Loop is a six-acre deck park that stretches over a highway in downtown Kansas City. Designed to create cross-city connections and provide diverse recreational amenities, this project will bridge social gaps and foster community connections while supporting Kansas City’s ongoing urban development.

The South Loop is a new deck park that will stretch over a six-lane highway in the heart of downtown Kansas City, creating cross-city connections and establishing a front yard for the community. At six-acres, the park will create ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, and eliminate traffic noise. Community priorities identified during public engagement sessions include an events lawn, public art, ornamental gardens, shady courts, and public restrooms. Additional programming possibilities include a restaurant, games terrace, performance pavilion, and a dog park with a bark bar.

The deck park will be an important amenity for residents and visitors to downtown, which is experiencing rapid commercial and residential development. The site is abutted by the Kansas City Convention Center to the west and stretches four blocks due east toward the Power & Light District— a bustling hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. By stitching these neighborhoods together, the South Loop will bridge social gaps, provide new economic opportunities, and foster a sense of connection and community as Kansas City continues to prosper.
