Avenue of the Arts 2.0

This transformational project will soften the urban realm of one of Philadelphia’s most important thoroughfares by integrating landscape, art, and activated pedestrian areas within the streetscape.

Avenue of the Arts refers to the stretch of South Broad Street between Philadelphia’s City Hall and Washington Avenue, home to the city’s premier performing arts district. The project aims to reimagine this prominent corridor as a vibrant 10-block destination featuring lush greenery, art installations, performance spaces, and inviting seating areas.

OJB is leading a one-block pilot project that will demonstrate the benefits of integrating landscape, art, and activated pedestrian areas within the streetscape. The pilot block—located between Pine and Spruce Streets—will ultimately inform the transformation of nine additional blocks along the Avenue. The design is inspired by the area’s rich musical legacy, using an un undulating pattern of planters to express rhythm and movement. Spaces for respite, social gatherings, and art installations are carved out within the streetscape to prioritize the pedestrian experience, with a buffer from vehicular traffic to ensure safety.

Phase 1A focuses on enhancing and introducing landscape to the central street median, and Phase 1B focuses on sidewalk improvements. The project will be implemented one block at a time as funding becomes available, totaling a $100 million investment in Philadelphia’s public realm.

In addition to planting, the pilot block proposes new signage and wayfinding, bus shelters, street furniture, sculptures, and interactive elements.
