Downtown Cary Park

This seven-acre park is envisioned as a key element in the revitalization of the downtown area for the community of Cary, North Carolina. Located near south of Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the downtown park expands on an existing town square, and establishes a highly programmed locus for all kinds of community activities.

The park design was developed after an extensive master planning process, with community needs at its core. Organized with a great lawn at its center, the landscape follows the natural contours of the rolling site. A 30-foot grade change across the site also provides an opportunity for a functional and educational stormwater wetland shaded by groves of existing large trees. The street edges of the park are more urban with a plaza, water features, and food and beverage programming. The great lawn and curved pavilion, designed by Machado Silvetti Architects, create an anchor for gatherings and performances. Curvilinear paths and forms complement the natural topography of the site and provide dynamic opportunities for play and gathering. The design elements are composed together to not only protect native ecologies, but also to allow people to discover the natural beauty of the landscape.
